The corner beside my bookshelf used to hold a stack of things waiting to be put away. On the first rainy Sunday of autumn, I decided it could hold me instead.
Start with the feeling
Before moving furniture, I wrote down three words: warm, tucked-away, unhurried. Those words made every later choice easier. The lamp needed amber light. The chair needed a blanket. The little table needed only enough room for tea.
- A comfortable chair or floor cushion
- A lamp below eye level
- One soft thing and one living thing
- A home for the current book
Leave a little emptiness
Cozy does not have to mean crowded. I left the wall mostly bare and kept only three books within reach. The quiet space around the chair is part of what makes it feel like a retreat.
A good nook is a tiny border around your attention. Step inside, and the rest of the room softens.
It took less than an hour to make. Now, whenever rain taps the window, the corner seems to switch on by itself.
